Director of Communications

MAJOR PURPOSE:   Develop and execute an integrated marketing communications strategy, following the goals of the Seminary’s strategic plan, to improve Hartford Seminary’s position as a national and international leader in graduate theological education. The Director will raise the visibility of the Seminary and its intellectual capital with a wide variety of audiences from different faiths, including potential students, media, alumni, and the School's diverse constituencies.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Communications/Public Relations

- Development and execution of a communications vision that serves a range of institutional priorities: student recruitment and retention, fundraising and alumni relations, internal communications, and media and public relations to craft and shape a multi-dimensional communications program.

- Develop metrics to report on the return on investment of all marketing initiatives and how these efforts support the goals of the Seminary’s strategic plan and can help strengthen and reinforce the Seminary’s brand.

- Develop and oversee an electronic communication plan for promoting the Seminary and its programs, with an emphasis on social media. 

- Plan, write, manage and coordinate marketing communications, such as newsletters, news releases, brochures, cards, and annual Seminary publications that publicize the Seminary’s mission and programs.

- Assist the Director of Recruitment and Admissions with materials related to recruitment.

- Promote of the Seminary through cost-effective advertising in a variety of media. -

- Cultivate productive relationships with the news media – locally, regionally, nationally and internationally – to place stories about the Seminary

- Coordinate with faculty to generate and place story ideas featuring their research and academic achievements.

Seminary Events

Responsible for schedule and coordination of the Educational Outreach Events (EDO).

Plans, coordinates and implements publicity for Seminary events.

REQUIREMENTS: Master's Degree in marketing, communication, or related field preferred. Minimum of five years of senior professional experience with supervisory responsibility and demonstrated success in marketing campaign execution. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to think creatively about a full range of communications efforts, from strategic positioning and branding to specific outreach to potential students and faith communities, with an emphasis on interfaith dialogue among Christian, Muslim and Jewish populations. Outstanding and elegant content writing and editorial skills are essential. Ability to work quickly and under deadline pressure. Comfort in working with variety of “publics.”  Knowledge of events management, journalism, graphic design and photography is a plus.
